BIBI HAJRA AND STATUS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

islam

The status of Women in Islam can not be doubtful as Islam has given privileges and rights to women which they never had in any other religions. But still nowadays the most frequent attack on Islamic values and morals is to question the status of women in Islam. The status of women in Islam is unique and matchless does not have any resemblance with previous religions or systems. Let us talk about the status of women in Islam with view to the history of Safa and Marwa. Safa and Marwa are two hills near to Holy Kaaba in city Makkah. Muslims who perform the Hajj and Umrah should run between the hills of Safa and Marwa. This is in the memory of a mother’s sacrifice for her son.

The great woman was Bibi Hajra (May ALLAH Almighty be pleased with her). She was the wife of Hazrat Ibraheem (A.S). Bibi Hajra was the Mother of Hazrat Ismaeel (A.S). Bibi Hajra’s sacrifice took place when She was left alone with her baby Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) in the valley of city Makkah all for the sake of ALLAH Almighty.

Verse 14:37 of Holy Quran;

Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

When Bibi Hajra became thirsty and Her Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) child also became thirsty. She started looking at her baby tossing in agony. She left him, for she could not bear looking at him, and found that the mountain of Safa was the nearest mountain. She stood on it and started looking at the valley enthusiastically so that she might see somebody, but She could not see anyone. Then she descended from Safa and when she reached the valley, she ran in the valley like a person in trouble and distress, till she crossed the valley and reached Marwa where she stood and started looking and expecting to see some water or someone help, but she could not see anybody. She repeated that act (running between Safa and Marwa) seven times. This act of running between the hills of Safa and Marwa by Bibi Hajra was so much loved by ALLAH Almighty that ALLAH has made running between Safa and Marwa obligatory for every man and Woman who performs Umrah and Hajj.

Verse 2:158 of Holy Quran;

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of ALLAH. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, ALLAH is appreciative and Knowing.

Today we drink from Zamzam water and it is ever flowing water, when you go for Umrah and Hajj. What a beautiful example of Status of women in Islam!!

During the Tawaaf (circumambulation) it is essential for a man to do two things

Tawaaf

  1. Al-ldhtebaa’ from the beginning of Tawaaf (circumambulation) tills the end. Al-ldhtebaa’ means placing the middle of a person’s Rida under his right arm and ends of it over his left shoulder.

When he is done with performing Tawaaf (circumambulation), he may return his Rida to its original position because the time for Idhtebaa’ is just during Tawaaf (circumambulation).

  1. Al-Raml during the initial three circuits. Al-Raml means speeding up person’s speed or pace with small steps. A pilgrim must walk at a normal speed during his last 4 circuits.

When he completes seven rounds or circuits of Tawaaf (circumambulation), he approaches Maqam-e-Ibrahim (station of ibrahim) and recites.

Verse 2:125 of Holy Quran

And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].

Pilgrims prays two short Rakats nafil namaz, as near as conveniently possible, behind the Maqam-e-Ibrahim. When pilgrim completes the two Rakats namaz he or she must return to the Hajr-e-Aswad (Black Stone) kiss it or touch it, if convenient. Then pilgrim performs Saaee

Pilgrim ascends As-Safaa until he or she is able to see the Holy Kaabah. Facing the Holy Kaabah and raising his hands, pilgrim praises ALLAH Almighty and makes any supplications (dua).

He descends As-Safaa and heads for mountain Al-Marwah at a normal speed until he reaches to the green marker. He should then run speedy until the next green marker. He continues toward Marwah at a normal speed. When he reaches it, he ascends it, faces the direction or Qibla, raises hands and repeats what said on Safaa.

Verse 2:158 of Holy Quran

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of ALLAH. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, ALLAH is appreciative and Knowing

Pilgrim continues this process until he or she completes seven laps.

During Saaee pilgrim may recite what he or she wills of supplications (dua), recitation of Holy Quran, and mentioning ALLAH Almighty. In completion of Saaee men completely shaves his head hairs, whereas women just clips her head hair the length of a finger tip. With that, Umrah is completed and now pilgrim is free from to the restrictions of Ihraam and to dress in other clothing, applies perfume etc.

PAYING ZAKAAT IS OBLIGATORY IN ISLAM

zakat

Zakaat is major known as charity and it is the most prominent the 3rd pillar of Islam. Providing the needy, poor and being charitable is a noble deed which highlights the superlative in the character of a Muslim. The genuine meaning of “Zakaat” is purity.

Why is the charity so necessary to offer? As the existence of the poor and needy people and the ones, who are starving without even our information, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims, is huge therefore giving charity reduces the population of such people and presents them with easiness in living their lives. In order to remain the economy moving in a healthy way and purify your wealth, contributing to charity is necessary and it’s also obligation. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) repeatedly insists on giving charity (Zakaat).

Types of Charity

The extreme types of charity are zakaat, paying zakaat is the obligatory charity and the second one is sadaqah that is the voluntary donation. Zakaat is the charity that is offered in a precise percentage amount from a person’s surplus wealth. This particular amount of zakaat can be given to the needy and poor people. Though, sadaqah can be given in any type of form that involves building a house, masjid, an intelligent advice or a smile.

Acts as a curtain on the Day of Resurrection

Giving charity is a worthy deed which not just serves you in this life but also in the life after death. When the complete shade on the Day of Qayamat will disappear, it will be the shade and shelter given by ALLAH Almighty to those people who used to give charity (zakaat) in their life and cared for the poor and needy.

Acts as shield from bad luck

Offering and giving from your own wealth for charity is an act loved by ALLAH Almighty. All the misfortunes and calamity of the person go away by donating. It is always superior to give. If you are a wealthy person and you have enough money over the expenses, then it is obligatory for you to help the poor and the needy with your money. You help people in their times of need, then ALLAH Almighty will present someone to you in your require time.

If somebody owes you some money and than you decide to show humbleness and kindness and do not get the money back then it is considered as charity. As charity creates a shelter and shade for the person on the Day of Qayamat so does clear a person in debt provides safety.

Islam is a religion which fulfils every need of a disciplined and progressive human society. Through zakaat, ALLAH Almighty gives an opportunity to diminish the greed of money from our hearts and raise the emotion of helping and supporting each other so that humanity would not die.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MONTH OF RAJAB

Rajab

The whole world is the creation of ALLAH Almighty, however, some places are considered more divine and sacred than others. For instance, prayers offered at Holy Makkah and Madina carry more significance and value than those offered at a normal and ordinary place. This is because few places are more sacred and close because of their origins or their history.

The Month of Rajab

In the same way, some months carry more significance and value than other months. For example, month of Rajab is considered more sacred. This is because of numerous reasons. The reasons are elaborated below.

The Significance of the month of Rajab

When the moon is sighted on the 1st night of Rajab, it is among the most blessed and sacred nights. During this night ALLAH Almighty accepts the supplications and prayers of His beings. The night is so blessed that Hazrat Ibna Soolki prayed to ALLAH Almighty to bestow him with death on the 1st night of Rajab.

According to Kitaabul Barkaat, individuals who fast (roza) on the 1st Thursday that arrives after the moon is seen will get or gain a place in Paradise (jannat) as a reward.

Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) says that,

“In Paradise (jannat) there is a canal named Rajab. Its water is whiter than milk, cooler than ice and sweeter than honey. The one who observes even a single fast in Rajab, he/she will be entitled to drink its water.”

The month of Rajab is so sacred that the Prophet (PBUH) said that if any Muslim woman or man observes fast (roza) for one day and spends the whole night worshipping ALLAH Almighty in the month of Rajab, ALLAH Almighty will write worshipping worth a year in his or her book of deeds and actions.

For all those peoples who cannot fast (roza) during the month of Rajab, they can give charity or bread to the poor and needy for every day of the month.

This shows that the month of Rajab is a sacred and blessed month that offers many rewards. As a Muslim, it is most excellent to take advantage of the blessings of this month.

Conclusion

The month of Rajab is a blessed month and a person should avail the opportunity to collect as many benefits as possible. Worshipping ALLAH Almighty during the month can help you in gaining tremendous rewards

Sometimes, people also learn Holy Quran during the month of Rajab to add more superior deeds in their deed book. It is a month during which ALLAH Almighty promises to listen to the prayers of his servants, forgive the sinners and reward those people who managed to repent on their sins. During this month of Rajab,

ALLAH Almighty also does not refuse any plea. Hence, being a Muslim, make sure you utilize this month to add more excellent deeds to your deed book.
